If you want to improve data quality, first you need to improve culture

I’m not going to lie, the word “Lockdown” gave me the ultimate fear, and still does probably. And I’m not afraid to say that my anxiety kicked in, almost instantly. For most people, including me, work is a huge part of my social life & it’s true what they say, interaction with humans on a face to face basis is vital for us to develop those social skills.
“I don’t have a garden”
“I don’t have a desk to work from at home”
“people are going to stop recruiting”
If you are anything like me, you will have drowned yourself in countless articles about how we’re not going to recover from this & endless amount of time in front of the TV listening to Piers Morgan give the MPs grief on what we should & shouldn’t be doing.
So how do we turn this negative into a positive & focus on YOU?
For me, going to work is usually vital for me to feel motivated and like I’m “making a difference”. The first thing I started noticing was working in my sweats/lounge wear… now that, is a big no no! Our natural habit is Pyjamas after a long day, right? I had to adjust and find a new normal which meant I had to dig out the old jeans and jumpers to make myself feel like I was at work. It does wonders for your mental health and really does change your focus towards work when you’re working from home.
We’ve all been affected from a career perspective by what is going on, but from a Recruitment perspective, I found some comfort and interest in connecting with some key contacts in my network to take the opportunity to see what they were up to, whether they were studying anything particular at the moment. Use it as an opportunity to point out each other’s achievements and discuss how you can better yourself when this is all over by utilising the advice of the intelligent candidates that we deal with on a daily basis.
Keep connected with your colleagues! Like I said above, this is VITAL for our mental health and social skills. At KDR, we’ve been using Kahoot! to create quizzes and get together every week to generally have a laugh and a virtual beer. If you have some staff furloughed & some not, get a group chat going on WhatsApp… & do not share articles about Covid19. Talk about achievements, discuss and share positivity.
Lastly, make sure to keep your body AND mind healthy… personally, I’ve been making use of “Strava” – an app where you can track your runs, walks & bike rides every single day and share your achievements with friends and family. It’s interesting what a little bit of boasting and praising can do to our mental health, isn’t it?
The bottom line is, look after your mental health throughout this pandemic, share successes & keep in touch with your colleagues. Just because we are social distancing, doesn’t mean we have to emotionally distance ourselves. The use of technology these days means we can interact with family members more than ever before!
