Video Game Analytics – Play the Game

Holiday seasons are on us and you can probably guess what’s on my wish list from this blog! (Santa, take note)

The video games industry is booming – global revenue is quoted far in excess of $100 billion in 2016! With so much capital investment, it made sense to find out more on how this dynamic, fun industry has cleverly used data and analytics to listen closely to its consumers and build successful business models based on customer behaviours.

Mobile Analytics Flurry discovered consumers that pay-to-play on Smart Phone games ranges 0.5% – 6% therefore revenue generation is lost on over 90% of consumers – to the detriment of game development, technical support, advertisement, server maintenance and other resources.

A new player approaches! Real-time analytics have proven potential to increase revenue and customer investment for pay-to-play functions, providing insight into player behaviour. This allows game developers to target customers for demand generation and build products around it.

Video Game Behemoths such as Sony and Microsoft are being challenged more and more by video game enterprises and with analytics improving game adoption, game longevity and long term return on investment – why wouldn’t a company that are so close to its consumer invest into analytics and truly understand and model their products?

One of the more interesting applications of Video Game Analytics is listed below – GameAnalytics.com provides free analytical tools for video game business of all sizes. They have delivered insight based on behavioural metrics, demonstrating value of analytics as a function;

  • Causes of game abandonment;
  • Players at risk of game abandonment;
  • Players propensity of purchase-to-play;
  • Most effective content/design; and
  • Effective retention strategy.

Of course, there are hundreds of metrics and really creative ways for developers to exploit analytics and exploit analytics for Video Gaming. What is already an exciting and creative industry is set for big things in the future as companies understand their players like never before – I only hope my gaming thumbs hold out long enough!

How do you think analytics is changing the gaming industry?
