The best career advice I’ve received…

As recruiters in the Information Management and Data Analytics industry we’re used to giving out career and interview advice, but when our team were starting their career, they also received career advice. We asked the KDR team what was the best career advice they received?

Always be selling

“When I was in my teens my Dad told me to ‘always be selling.’ Whether it’s yourself or your company, or even where you live, always present yourself in the best possible light. Or words to that effect; it was a long time ago!” – Mark

Always ask advice

“Best career advice that I was given was to always ask for advice, even if it’s a simple circumstance. It’s always better to get a second opinion around a tricky situation. It’s helped me.” – Tom

Luck

“Simple – ‘you make your own luck in this game’…” – Chris

Be Passionate

“Look to find a career you are passionate about – when you’re passionate about your job, you’re excited. You work longer hours and end up accomplishing much more. Life is too short to settle for a career that you hate!” – Ben

Be persistent

“Following on from finishing university and deciding that I wanted to pursue a career in a sale based role I spoke to a friend who already worked in the industry to see if they had any career advice for me. The best advice they gave me was to try and get a job in cold calling, door to door sales. They said if I can stick this out, handle the rejection and bounce back, then I could be successful in anything.” – James

Do what you love

“The best career advice I was given is to do what you love and have a passion for. Don’t settle for a role that isn’t you.” – Gemma

Communicate

“Don’t be afraid to express your opinions in a meeting or to schedule a sit down with a colleague or manager. It could be to discuss more details on a piece of work or deal with a sensitive situation. You should have your ideas heard, it’s so important to communicate with others in the workplace to connect with co-workers, you spend most of the working weeks with them!” – Amy

Attitude

“Positive mental attitude” – Mike
