Social media has become a part of our lives, and it’s no secret that many employers and recruiters use it to find out more about you before hiring. Your social media profiles have become the new first impression, it can give your future employer a real insight it to you and your life. Social media has the potential to ruin your job search.

And it’s not just your potential future employer that is looking you up, your current employer is probably doing the same thing.

What shouldn’t you be doing on social media?

Don’t: be inappropriate

But do voice your opinion. Always think about how your comments may be seen by someone else, obviously you should be voicing your opinion but don’t try to be offensive. If your comments are controversial lock down your profile, keep it completely private.

In the age of ‘fake news’ it’s easy to get caught up in arguments online, it’s healthy to debate but keep it clean and leave out the threats.

Don’t: pull a sickie

It has happened in many businesses time and time again; an employee calls in sick then posts their day out on Facebook. Obviously, don’t pull a sickie but if you do don’t post about it online. You might think your boss won’t see it if you are not friends with them but nothing on the internet is entirely private, the likelihood is your boss will see it at some point. 

Don’t: slag off your company

Had a bad day? Got shouted at by your boss? Don’t post about it on Facebook. Everyone has bad days at work but complaining about your company or your boss (or colleagues) on social media is never a good idea, it will always get back to them. Keep any comments about you company neutral, if you’re not happy keep it to yourself instead of posting it for the world to see.

Social media is important to your image, it can affect every aspect of your life, so it really is important that you are aware of what you should and shouldn’t be doing. Keep in mind these points when posting on your profiles or you could find yourself in hot water.
