I’ve been working in the data and analytics industry for several years now; in that time I have recruited for plenty of contractors. The demand for skilled contractors is always high, and it shows no sign of slowing down.
Making the move to contracting can be a challenge; as the demand is high it can be difficult to stand out from the crowd so I want to take a look at what really makes a data and analytics contractor successful.
As a contractor, you have to be adaptable to changes. You may be working at a company for a set 3 months contract on a project, but the needs of the business may change and your contract might need to be extended. Being flexible in your work and your skills will put you above the rest. You may also need to be flexible in your location as many contractors on the market are willing to travel for contracts.
As well as being flexible in your time, you have to be flexible and adaptable when first joining a company. As a contractor, you will be expected to join any projects and understand the business needs quickly, as well as fitting in with the company culture.
Keeping your skills up to date is essential to stand out from the rest, making sure you know the latest tools in the industry and keeping up to date with the latest tech trends is key to staying in demand. Become an expert at what you do.
Once you have developed the right skills, show them off. Generally, you will have been hired because of your data expertise, so by showing these off you can become the go to person. By doing this the company are more likely to recommend you in the future, and may even want to re-hire you if another opportunity arises.
Once you have successfully completed contracts your past record will speak for itself. By seeing jobs and projects through to the end, and by completing longer stints you are showing future companies you are serious and will put the time and effort into their business.
These are just a few of many things that make a successful contractor, but I think the most important one is to be happy in what you do. Contracting is not always for everyone, but someone who enjoys the variety and work is more likely to succeed.
