Career in data industry

It’s the time of year where students are taking their final exams and are preparing to graduate. Many students are now starting to look at their career and what industry they want to work in, my colleague recently wrote about the questions every grad should ask themselves before choosing their career, but I want to have a look at why you might want a career in the data industry.

Naturally, as a recruiter I speak to a wide-range of candidates and I’m always curious as to why they love working in the data and analytics industry!

Analytical

If you’re the kind of person that likes to have all the facts so you can make an informed decision, data analytics may just be the career path for you. Many of the candidates I spoke with mentioned that being able to use analytical thinking was one of the reasons they enjoy the sector so much.

Influence

Being able to influence others, especially stakeholders within a business comes hand-in-hand with analytics. Data that has been analysed can provide hard facts which can have a real influence on business decisions, while you won’t be making these decisions you can certainly guide them.

Varied

Every single industry, from gaming to manufacturing, is collecting data and they need this data analysing. The data can also vary inside a business, are you interested in marketing? Pricing? Customer experience? With such a wide variety of industries collecting different types of data you can really target what excites you.

Creativity

Working in data isn’t just about the analytics, it’s also about how you present the data and the story you tell. As one of my candidates put it “Data Science doesn’t and shouldn’t care about credentials, it should be about creativity, method and your ability to tell a story using both”.

Exciting

Naturally everyone wants to work in an exciting industry, and the data and analytics industry can be just that. As mentioned above the variety of work available can allow anyone to pinpoint where they want to specialise and what data they want to be working with.

While there are many reasons as to why people choose their career, I found it interesting that many of my candidates where saying the same thing: you don’t just have to just like data, you have to live and breathe it.
