Data Analyst

I’ve been working in the Information Management and Analytics industry for almost 2 years now and I still love finding out how people chose their career path and how they became the best at what they do. Recently I have been working on several data analyst roles which led me to thinking, what makes a superstar data analyst?

Technical 

As a data analyst strong technical knowledge will always be needed. In order to be able to analyse data effectively you have to be able to understand it and be a part of the process and operations behind it.

All data analysts I speak to have some form of programming language, typically all data analysts that I speak with use SQL to query data or extract it from a data warehouse, but if you really want to stand out from the crowd – try looking into R or Python programming languages. These are becoming increasingly popular in requirements for roles and it’s probably more of a “nice to have skill” which would set you apart from the crowd. 

Some data analysts also have the ability to understand the design and development of databases and data migration processes. Having a strong knowledge of these practises can really help you to standout.

Analytical

Pretty obvious, but you will always need a strong analytical background to make it as a data analyst. But to really standout as a data analyst you need to know what to prioritise in the data and know what is essential to the task at hand. You also need to be able to help make decisions from the data you have analysed.

Business

Once the data had been analysed it needs to be presented to stakeholders and senior people in the business, in order to help them make better decisions. As a standout data analyst you will need effective communication skills in order to present the reports you have made, some of the people you present to may not understand the technical jargon, so you should be able to explain your analysis to non-technical people.

Personality

While having the technical and analytics skills is a must to get your foot in the door, it’s your personality that will get you the job. When interviewing I always tell my candidates, no matter what they are interviewing for, to make sure their personality and characteristics come out, this way the hiring manager can really gauge who you are and if you will be a good fit for the company.

There are many things that help people standout in the workplace, from speaking to many of my candidates these seem to be the best traits of standout data analysts.
