There is a common myth in our industry that hiring tends to stop, many candidates will put their job search on hold and wait until January, the busiest time for job hunting. It can be more difficult to get a new job in December but it can also be the best time of year.

Less competition

With many people taking the belief that December is a bad time to look for a new job, there are less people on the market meaning the competition between candidates is much lower. With less people competing for the same job your application and CV is probably more likely to be noticed.

Networking opportunities

At this time of year there are always plenty of parties and meet-ups to attend, while throwing your CV out to everyone you meet might not be the best idea it is a good way to get word out that you are looking for a new job, and gives you the opportunity to connect and network with the right people.

Re-connect

Christmas time is also a great way to reconnect with people in your network, by simply sending an e-card or even a ‘Merry Christmas, let’s have a catch up’ message you are putting your name in the front of people’s minds. If that catch up happens you can then mention you are looking for a new role.

Festive feelings

While not everybody enjoys Christmas there does tend to be a better mood during this time of year, you might find it easier to approach hiring managers, or recruiters. According to Business Insider ‘approaching them [hiring managers] while they are in a thankful and charitable mindset increases your chances of successfully securing an interview”, that is unless they are a Christmas Scrooge.

Ready for January

If you don’t get that job in December you have set yourself up for January, by job searching in December you can continue your efforts in the New Year. While everyone else is trying to re-write their CV, network with the right people and get hiring manager’s attention you will have already done this.

While there are pros and cons to job searching in December it is definitely worth starting your hunt ready for January, here at KDR we can see that the job market in the information management and analytics industry is not slowing down.
