Learn data industry

1 month ago Shazia joined KDR with absolutely no knowledge of the Information Management and Analytics industry. It’s fair to assume that one month on she is probably still feeling a bit lost but while Shaz is still learning more every day, she really has immersed herself in the industry. I interviewed Shaz to find out how she did this.

What were your first impressions of the data and information management industry?

I was extremely confused!

I had no idea about data and information management; I’ve never recruited in this sector and didn’t have a clue what it even meant! It was encouraging to hear that no one in the office had come from a data and IM background and that they too had felt the same.

Have those impressions changed? What are they now?

I’ve learnt so much in the last 5 weeks that I’ve been at KDR, Data and IM doesn’t seem half as scary as it used to!

How did you learn about the industry?

It was just a case of listening to the other recruiters on the phone, speaking to data and IM candidates and joining relevant groups on LinkedIn. Doing all this has really boosted my knowledge of the industry.

Are you still learning about the industry? How are you doing this?

I’ve always found in recruitment the best way to learn about something new is to ask candidates, I usually mention at the start of the conversation with a candidate that the world of data is relatively new to me and that it would be great if they could explain to me what certain things mean.

What has helped you the most?

Being given the right tools to access the best candidates has really helped; I really like the way KDR invest in their consultants.

Also speaking to candidates has really helped, they’re bursting with information about the industry and they’re happy to explain something to me when I don’t understand!

What is your favourite part of the industry?

I really enjoy working on new roles, because I’m still learning about the industry and I’m being given a variety of roles, it’s really exciting to work on something I’ve never recruited in before.

What advice would you give to someone starting in the IM industry?

I would say try to apply for internships or try and do some work experience, any commercial experience you can get will really make your CV stand out.
