Business Intelligence (or BI) is a data function that leverages software and skillsets to transform data into actionable insights. These insights then inform the strategies and tactical business decisions an organisation needs to make. Business Intelligence professionals use tools to access and analyse data sets to present the findings in more visual ways and using informative narratives to provide detailed intelligence about sections of a business, depending on the remit.
Reporting is a central function of Business Intelligence and it is the job of the professional to present the data in a digestible manner. Dashboards are perhaps the staple output of the Business Intelligence world, they help to give an immediate temperature check for a business looking at a particular metric or metrics. BI is not all about report building however, the discipline offers a way for people to use data to understand trends by streamlining the process of searching, merging and querying the data to help make sound business decisions.
When you start out in your first Business Intelligence Job, it is likely that you will start as a data analyst, business analyst or data report writer. Gaining experience in these areas first will help to give a solid foundation in data, looking for opportunities within these roles to query SQL, model and analyse data and define or manage smaller projects. All of these experiences will help you to get a better sense of the end to end process within the kinds of projects a business intelligence job will expose you to. You might want to consider gaining a Microsoft qualification such as the Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert in Business Intelligence to help you get to the next level.
