Is technology revolutionising agriculture?
Arguably every industry in the world is having to embrace new technology, from the Internet of Things to the collecting of even more big data. One industry that is no stranger to the adaption is agriculture; the world of farming is quickly being transformed by the rise of tech and analytics.
According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization the world will ‘need to produce 70% more food in 2050 than it did in 2006’, farmers are having to incorporate technology into their day-to-day lives in order to meet this demand.
Drones
Many farmers are starting to see drones as a vital tool to monitor their livestock and crops remotely. With a vast amount of land that has to be monitored, drones can allow the farmer to be in one place that needs attention while simultaneously checking somewhere else. These drones are also allowing farmers to collect data.
Crop Sensors
By placing sensors within their fields farmers can collect the data in order to understand their crops. it can also allow them to create detailed maps of the land and the resources surrounding it. The data can be accessed remotely via a smartphone so they can monitor as they need.
Livestock Sensors
Devices which are connected wirelessly to the internet can be inserted into the ear of cows, each device can allow the farmer to detect any disease and can allow them to monitor each cow’s health individually. This kind of technology could be vital to farmers who want to understand disease patterns in the livestock and can allow them to pick any symptoms up early before the disease spreads.
Climate Predictions
The ability to understand climate change and weather patterns will be invaluable to farmers. By understanding this a farmer can know when is the best time for crops to grow and whether they need to change what crops they grow entirely. While the area of predicting weather is not 100% accurate (but is getting better) it can certainly help farmers to make better decisions regarding their crops.
These are just a few examples of how technology is revolutionising agriculture, and with more of these technologies being developed the farmers can start to meet the food demand by 2050. And who knows one day we may see self-driving tractors!
