If you’ve reached the point where you’re ready to resign, it is important to try and leave on good terms and with a positive impression. Your current employer may be contacted for a reference and it is also important to protect your own reputation within your industry.
Here are our tips on how to resign as smoothly as possible:
Try to avoid discussing it with colleagues until you have spoken to your boss and formally handed in your notice.
Handing your notice in can be daunting so write down your reasons for leaving so you know exactly why you are doing this. A good way of doing this can be to write a resignation letter to yourself.
Check your notice period in your contract and write a formal letter of resignation stating you will be leaving and when your final working day will be so you can take this with you when you meet your boss.
Plan in advance what you are going to say but try to keep to the point as much as possible. Although you need to remember the reasons you are leaving, avoid making negative comments about the company or your time working there.
It is possible they will try to keep you and you may get a counter offer. Although this is flattering you do need to remember your reasons for leaving in the first place. For tips on how to handle this situation see our blog about how to handle a counter offers.
Once you have officially handed your notice in you can tell your other work colleagues but do try to avoid speaking negatively about the company or your reasons for leaving. Remember your colleagues are still working there and it is far better to leave things on a positive note.
