According to a study by Burning Glass Technologies demand for Data Scientist and Data Engineers in the UK tripled over the past five years, rising 231%. In the US, the role has been identified as one of the top 15 jobs to have emerged over the last 5 years and has topped the emerging job list for three years running. This is down to its continuous growth across all industries according to LinkedIn’s 2020 Emerging Jobs report.
With multiple routes into this profession, there are opportunities to harness the trend towards hybrid roles where skill sets that wouldn’t traditionally sit next to each other are starting to merge. Knowing the skillset that the employers are looking for will put you at an advantage when looking for a job as a Data Scientist.

A Data Scientist maintains, collects and cleans the large amounts of data an organisation generates. They then interpret the data, building algorithms to present their findings back to the business to showcase any insights. Data can be utilised to solve any key issues the business is facing in order to create innovative ways to do better.

Data is crucial for businesses to thrive and help understand behaviours and anticipate trends to then define smarter strategies and decisions.

Business Intelligence refers to the process of finding patterns in historical data. A Data Scientist would build predictive models in order to draw upon any insights from the data. This process involves data handling and tools such as SQL, PowerBI and Excel.
Data Visualisation is the visual representation of data. Using scripting or a range of visual tools such as graphs or charts help a Data Scientist break data sets down and make sense of their findings. An interview in this field is a skill-based process which opens up the role to people with diverse backgrounds. Choosing a recruiter who specialises in your area of expertise will help you refine, not only the type of business you would enjoy working for but also where best your skills will fit.
You can learn data science without going to university and having a degree. You will notice that many businesses ask for degrees, however, don’t be put off, if you don’t have one alternative routes may be accepted. You will need an array of skills or certifications to prove you can do the job.
Many Data Scientists have a PhD, Masters or a Bachelor’s degree and if you haven’t, enrolling onto courses or boot camps may be a good alternative.
Data is rapidly becoming the world’s most valuable resource. With that comes a lot of responsibility and care. Data Scientists help ensure its efficacy and the advice provided help a business negotiate often unchartered waters.
