How to be a stand out Data Scientist

I’ve been working in the industry of information management and analytics for over a year now and I have come across many different professionals, one role that always spikes my interest is that of a Data Scientist.

The role is constantly being talked about as the ‘new hot job’ in the market so I wanted to know what really makes a successful Data Scientist and how you can stand out in the crowd.

Technical

Obviously, a strong technical knowledge is going to be needed to even be considered for this role. To be a data scientist you need a strong knowledge of programming and coding languages such as Python and Java and although it is not always required experience of big data platforms and databases like Hadoop can really help you to stand out.

As a data scientist the need to work with unstructured data is a must, to be able to be a successful data scientist you will have to understand this data and be able to pull insight from it.

Analytical

Analytics should be a part of your technical knowledge but should be at the forefront. As the Data Scientist stakeholders and teams will be looking at you to analyse their raw data and produce solutions and business objectives from this.

Being able to analyse raw data in one thing but you will also need to be able to present it in a way that non-technical team members and stakeholders will understand. Being able to manage stakeholders and gain their buy-in can be a massive influencer.

The world of data science is ever expanding and the need and want for these professionals is on the rise, it is clear that to stand out from the crowd not only will a Data Scientist needed technical and analytics knowledge and skills, they will need the softer skills as well.

Are you a Data Scientist? How do you make sure you stand out? Let me know in the comments below.
