As we all know, finding out you have any form of terminal illness is a scary prospect. It may sometimes seem difficult to be positive minded & find a way to get through it. Nowadays, technology is evolving rapidly, and the help and development of new technology in treatment is helping people not only live longer but determine the most effective way to treat their illness.
There are some crazy but amazing technologies out there that help medical professionals monitor and prevent ill health. MC10 develops a Bio stamp that is ‘thinner than a plaster’, which can monitor temperature, sense any movement and heart rate – all these things are especially important when it comes to our health, all this data can then be transmitted wirelessly. Using big data and artificial intelligence, the software translates the body’s data into a language understandable to us humans.
Radiation in cancer treatment used to be a dangerous treatment (or at least we thought). New technology has lessened that danger and made radiation into a safer, more effective way of treatment.
DeepMind can use machine learning to assist clinicians to improve radiotherapy scans, which ultimately detect head or neck cancers. DeepMind uses an application of Artificial Intelligence (Machine Learning) which helps this process by accessing data, and more importantly uses an algorithm that automatically identifies between the good and bad cells. It may be able to cut the time needed for an accurate read to just one hour, this helps doctors to spend more time on patient care.
A company called Ybrain has specifically built a device to target parts of the brain using electrical signals that try to reduce the symptoms of brain diseases, like Alzheimer’s. As well as monitoring & analysing it aims to enhance the individuals brain functions that have been developed purely on the foundation of computer science.
Sometimes, those of us with heart problems must be given a pacemaker, a pacemaker is a battery which uses wires and electrodes that power the generator which all connects to the heart. This piece of technology helps monitor and control our heartbeat. The sensors (electrodes) will detect your hearts activity and then sends data through to the computer.
Then, if your heart activity is not quite right, the computer will ensure that electrical pulses are sent to your heart through the wires.
These are just some of the technologies that are helping us fight disease and terminal illness today, they are everchanging & constantly evolving. As the technology continues to develop, the use cases are only going to grow.
