How NOT to hire in 2018

For the past few years in January we have been giving our top tips on the best way to hire the perfect candidates throughout the year. There is plenty of advice and tips on how to do this, but there is also plenty you shouldn’t be doing.

The New Year is upon us and now is one of the busiest times of the year for candidates on the market as ‘Blue Monday’ strikes. Good candidates with strong technical skills are highly sought after so what should you avoid doing when hiring new staff?

Move slowly

Obviously, you want to take your time when finding the right candidate, you don’t want to rush the hiring process as this person will hopefully be at your company for a long time. However, there is such a thing as moving too slowly.

When you find that perfect candidate moving too slowly can put your chances of securing them at risk, you may lose them to a competitor who is moving quicker and showing more commitment to hiring them.

You need to be showing your commitment and company culture throughout the entire process. Sometimes even just a quick email or phone call explaining why there is a delay can be enough to show the candidate you are committed, and they haven’t been forgotten.

Break relationships

Building relationships is always important when wanting to hire new staff, whether this be with your existing (or previous) employees or your chosen recruitment agency. Therefore, it is essential you maintain any existing relationships and try to avoid them breaking down negatively.

If an employee is leaving make sure it ends on good terms, find out why they are moving on and if they have any issues don’t take them personally. Try to listen to what each person has to say and act on it accordingly. Word can travel quickly in the data and analytics industry and the last thing you want is a bad name which in turn will put potential new employees off. On the other hand, make sure your existing, happy employees are shouting about your business.

It is also important to maintain a good relationship with your recruitment agency. For your agency to find the best candidates you need to be open and honest with them. By giving insight into your business the recruitment agency can gain a good impression of your company culture and help find you the right people.

Be modest

No-one likes a show off but there is no harm in shouting about your company and showing off your company culture and why your employees like working for you. If you are proud of what your business has achieved you should be highlighting this throughout the recruitment process, this can give potential employees a real insight into the culture.

Don’t forget about your social media and marketing presence, these tools can be a great way to not just attract new candidates to your business but can also help to showcase what makes you different to any competitors.

Whether you are hiring one member of staff or building a new team it is always important to remember the basics in the recruitment process. Avoid these mistakes and you can attract, and retain, the very best data and analytics candidates.

How do you make sure you attract the best candidates? What mistakes should hirers be avoiding?
