5 Great Resources for Women in Tech
With so much being written on the topic of ‘women in tech’ these days, I wanted to share some resources for anyone who might be looking for career advice, networking opportunities, or other helpful information.
Here are some of our favourites:
1. Women in Technology International
Women in Tech International is a global organisation with a reach exceeding 2 million. WITI provides access to, and support from, a vast network of women working in business and technology, and offers such services as career searches, conferences and events, small business programs and webinars.
2. The Suitcase Entrepreneur
A twice-weekly podcast founded by Natalie Sisson, an entrepreneur and contributor to such publications as Forbes, Under30CEO, Young Entrepreneur, and the Huffington Post. The podcast features tips from Sisson and other women about succeeding in business, achieving work-life balance, and other topics of particular interest to women.
3. The Female Perspective of Computer Science
The personal blog of Gail Carmichael, a software developer and educator. The site covers a range of topics, from STEM education and book reviews on coding to gaming. Carmichael writes extensively as well about her PhD studies in computer science and her experiences as a programmer.
4. Women Techmakers
Google’s program for women in tech. This site offers links to dozens of online communities, ranging across a wide range of specialities, interests, and age groups. Women Techmakers also features resources including articles, videos and podcasts from women at Google on such topics as product management and public speaking, as well as information on upcoming conferences and workshops.
5. Codebar.io
Codebar is a non-profit initiative that runs regular events that aim to make technology and coding more accessible to everyone. Their website features free online tutorials in HTML and CSS, Javascript, Ruby, Python, and PHP, as well as information on a variety of programming workshops they host throughout the U.K. Read the online blog for recaps of past events and helpful articles on a number of coding-related topics.
Extra: Girl About Tech
This one isn’t strictly work-related, but it’s a great resource for learning about the latest gadgets, apps, desktop systems, and tech-driven appliances (check out the Bluetooth app-controlled coffee maker!). The site offers some terrific lifehacks too; I particularly loved the post about preparing Christmas dinner.
